🌿 The Power of Empathy

By Gola Mohammadi, Certified DBT Practitioner

Empathy, a core component of Emotional Intelligence (EQ), is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. People with a higher EQ are often better able to recognize and feel empathy, which strengthens relationships, improves communication, and fosters a supportive and collaborative environment.

Psychologists commonly describe three types of empathy, each playing a different role in how we connect with others:

🧠 Cognitive Empathy – Understanding Perspectives

  • What it is: Recognizing how someone else thinks or feels without experiencing it yourself.
  • Why it matters: Improves communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making.
  • Try it: Ask open-ended questions, listen carefully, and mentally put yourself in others’ shoes.

đź’¬ Emotional Empathy – Feeling What Others Feel

  • What it is: Actually, sharing another person’s emotions.
  • Why it matters: Builds trust, deepens relationships, and encourages compassion.
  • Try it: Notice tone, expressions, and body language; reflect on how you’d feel; acknowledge emotions without judgment.

🤝 Compassionate Empathy – Acting on Understanding

  • What it is: Understanding + emotional awareness + desire to help.
  • Why it matters: Strengthens teamwork, encourages supportive action, and builds an inclusive environment.
  • Try it: Offer help, collaborate on solutions, and provide encouragement.

📊Important:

Practical tip: The most practical type of empathy is compassionate empathy, because it moves beyond understanding and awareness to taking meaningful action

Although individuals may differ in their natural ability to express empathy, it is a skill that can be strengthened over time. Through reflection, learning, and meaningful interactions with others, we can all improve our ability to understand and support those around us.

Organizations that cultivate empathy often see stronger teamwork, better communication, and higher employee engagement. When people feel understood and supported, they collaborate more effectively and contribute positively to their teams.

đź’ˇ Quick Tip

Empathy often begins with active listening. Ask Open-Ended Questions and Avoid Immediate Judgment.
